“No looking ahead, no tomorrows. Just today.”

On an exotic background, very different from the LA, or NYC one, Howard Hawks brings us this great, dangerous adventure featuring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur. Some might say this film is too old, and, unfortunately, here and there it’s true. But that doesn’t mean it is a bad film, no way, I liked it a lot, especially due to the main characters.

The story follows Geoff Carter (Cary Grant), the chief of pilots and manager of Barranca Airways, a small airmail company owned by “Dutchy” (Sig Ruman). One day, Bonnie Lee (Jean Arthur) arrives on a banana boat in the port town Barranca. She is greeted by 2 of Geoff’s pilots, who try to impress her. Then something terrible happens, and Bonnie will face a sad, but real, fact about the life of every pilot. Along the way, Geoff meets again with his ex-girlfriend Judith (Rita Hayworth), now the wife of another talented pilot – Bat Mac Pherson.

On the acting part, everyone does a great job. If you have watched “His Girl Friday” (also directed by Howard Hawks and with Cary Grant), then you’ll see there is a similarity between the characters portrayed by Grant. The man with no visible emotion, with no attachment to any women, crazy about work, and so on. He is such a great actor, with some unforgettable performances. Jean Arthur is also an actress I just love after her role in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”. She has some lovely scenes where the chemistry, and dialogue between her and Grant are perfect.

Although Rita Hayworth has only a supporting role, every time she’s on the screen, she tries to demonstrate that her success is not based only on beauty, but also on talent. I liked her a lot too. The special effects are pretty good, I mean for that time, the reason why the film was nominated for this category at the Academy Awards.

All in all, the film is a good one. I’d give it 4.5/5, but that’s only my personal opinion. Try to watch it, even though there are people that say the movie is boring and too long. Everyone can have a different opinion about it, so the best way to find out is to watch it. Enjoy it, and stay safe!
